Sanctuaries

Through a series of works titled Sanctuaries, I explore the relationship between memory and essence. A sanctuary can be a physical or an abstract space of refuge. Usually, sanctuaries are perceived as actual spaces visited in times of desperation, but they also reside in the mind in the form of memories and are visited through imagination and dreams. The synthesis of these two separate forms of spaces creates an alien yet familiar essence. The common element that binds my sanctuaries series is the use of landscape and abstract structures. Landscapes are frequently presented in a dualistic format: the sky and the ground. Because of this common practice, landscapes tend to be imagined in terms of the horizon. By introducing abstract structures to the cliché way of landscape representation, I seek to provoke feelings and memories that are associated with solace.
